Bookbind jig schedule

Hello Folks,

I am wanting to make a bookbind jib, and at first i have made a schedule which i want to share. Here it is (btw the measurements are in centimeters, and the jig is based for a A5 size book) Let me know what you people think of it:

Writerman,

Very nice sketch. This should result in a useful jig.

The only difference between what you've drawn and what I created when I made my own jig is that mine has the back board glued to the top of the base and not the edge.

Make sure to post up a picture when you get it built so we can see how it turned out.

I did that, that no pages of the bundle might creep in to the narrow space in between the board itself and the backboard. I will post a pic when i have build it.

I use a very similar jig and nearly always bind a stack of 4 page signatures (4 pages on a single sheet of paper folded in half.)

My results gluing stacks of folded pages have been excellent. Some people who have followed my basic example like to cut notches across the spine before gluing. This gives the glue a little extra surface area to bond too and improves the strength of the spine.

Nice work. Looks like your jig turned out very well.

Is the MDF stiff enough for the cross bar, or does it flex a bit when you tighten the wing nuts? I can't imagine it would make much difference, but I'm just curious (I used poplar for mine.)

If you tighten it too much, it bends a bit. But if you tighten just so far that it just not bends, you have then tighten it enough for the binding. Perhaps i should have used one thicker format MDF, but this jig does his job perfect. The store i went, just calculated 1,60 euro (about 1$ i think) for the wood, and they cutted the pieces.
