Just wondering if anyone can give me a rule of thumb for interior margins. I'm about to give my first bookbinding project a go.

My personal approach is to get a book that looks good to me and measure the margins. Find something that is similar to what you want to create and use the same margins. You don't have to be super-precise. Just get close and give it a try.

I would suggest staying between 3/4" to 1" in the "gutter" margin.  I hate forcing a book open to read the beginning of sentences or, as in my case, spreadsheets.  You can make your outside margins 3/4.  I like a book that doesn't feel like they've tried to cram everything on one page.  Be spacious and gracious with the contents on your pages.
